The bedroom is not just a place to sleep, it is a sanctuary personal to you; somewhere you can escape to at the end of the day and relax in a harmonious space designed to your taste. Design your dream bedroom by first choosing your style of bed and using it as inspiration for the rest of the decorating scheme.

ELEGANCE
Striking, bold and elegant, a four-poster bed will always make a statement. When used in the correct size room, its impact will be theatrical and beautiful. Obviously, if used in a small room, the desired effect will backfire and the bed becomes oppressive.

The four-poster bed was originally designed to be enclosed by curtains to keep the draught out. Nowadays, fabric is not always incorporated and the skeleton frame is left bare, creating a contemporary twist from the clean lines and oriental feel.

Should you choose to use fabric as originally intended, opt for a sumptuous bold print for a regal look or a floaty lightweight fabric for a tranquil haven-style room. Link the rest of the room design in with the bed by adding mirrored bedside tables, glass stemmed table lamps, a long ornate wall-hung mirror, well-dressed windows and coordinating cushions for an opulent space to retreat to.

 

FRENCH STYLE
If your taste bends slightly towards the classics, then a Louis XV-style bed will be the inspiration for a French scheme.
Keep it fresh and feminine by using florals and subtle stripes in muted tones of green, dusky pinks and cream. Quilted, layered bed linen will provide a country feel. Tie-in the accessories by colour coordinating and using wooden furniture matching or complementing the bed.
Overall, remember to keep the room airy, spacious and light without looking too stark or cold. Dress the windows subtly using simple roman blinds in pretty fabrics. Adorn the walls carefully by hanging delicate life drawings and always display a vase of fresh flowers.

CONTEMPORARY
The minimal option of a Divan doesn’t have to be boring. By adding an oversized padded headboard you can create a modern twist.
Keep the colour scheme neutral to tie-in with the contemporary edge by using coffee, pale blue and stone.
Let the room’s minimalist look be its talking point by making sure you have plenty of storage to conceal clutter. This in turn will help the space appear lighter.
When choosing fabrics keep colours neutral and patterns to a minimum so they are not a distraction. Think to add warmth and depth using texture instead.
Install a couple of floating shelves and display a handful of items of contemporary stature for a deliberate eye-catching arrangement.
