A hallway makes the first impression of a home and
sets the scene for the rest of the house. Whatever
your style, grand or simple, traditional or
contemporary, the decoration can make for a
beautiful entrance.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT STYLE
The architecture of your home or style of your
interior, will help you decide upon a style for
your hallway. However, this transitional space
from outside to in, is likely to be a fusion of the two.

A FEW IDEAS
A couple of well-chosen pieces of elegant furniture
will add interest to a traditional hallway. Position
the furniture symmetrically to create a sense of
order and balance.

The use of an eye-catching pendant light can make a striking design statement. Additional lighting such as table lamps can add atmosphere to a simple scheme.

Using a contrasting carpet up the stairs will draw the eye inwards and upwards, creating a sense of intrigue.

The advantage of a larger hallway is that you can centrally display grand pieces of furniture and sculpture that make a statement.

A good option for hall floors is stone. Choose flagstone for a more rustic feel and limestone for a sleeker look. Stone tends to be expensive but is extremely durable and a good investment. Its cold, utilitarian edge can be soften effectively with the use of rugs and runners.

Neatly carpeted stairs combined with a simple wooden staircase, both in neutral colours, can create the look of a streamlined country home.

Highlighting one aspect of the hallway can change its focal point. For example, installing an ironwork banister on a sweeping stairway can add elegance, lifting the eye up and along it as you enter.

Limited space can be used efficiently and to its maximum by effectively colour co-ordinating.  By keeping a uniformed colour scheme running through the hallway and tying in each element, the room will appear less cluttered and more considered.
