Hygge Happiness at Home- Inspiration from the Danish
04 December 2020Almost a year ago, at a time predating the current pandemic, I treated myself to a mini retreat in the Danish town of Silkeborg. Surrounded by hills, the town is celebrated by nature lovers. Its rivers and streams serve as the perfect backdrop to lush forests. I will certainly be heading back once it’s safe to do so.
On the final day of my visit, I took a trip to the old town where I stumbled upon boutiques and shops, one of which particularly stood out: A one-of-a-kind candle shop called Ester and Erik that offers handmade candles in a truly unique style. I was drawn by the many variations on display, including various shapes, sizes and colors. Personally, I instantly fell in love with the shop and knew I had to bring some candles home.
Aside from its astounding nature and memorable boutiques, Denmark highlighted the significance of hygge and well-being; an idea that has been cultivated over the years as a shield against cold, dreary weather. The Danish have mastered the art of well-being at home, and I am inspired by their way of creating a cosy home for family and friends no matter the time of year. What struck me about hygge is that it's essential to living ‘Danishly’ and that absolutely everyone in Danish society has embraced the concept. Since then, I’ve tried to create hygge moments at home. I find that their approach is a great and effortless way to boost overall well-being and happiness.
The concept is rather simple. When done right, it makes homes cosier and people happier. Think: sitting by the fireplace on a cold night, wearing a wooly jumper, wrapped under a warm throw and most likely surrounded by candles. Throw in some tea or red wine, and some good company - that’s hygge.
If this sounds like a dream to you, recreating your own hygge experience is achievable. There are countless ways to instantly create a cosy environment. For candles, my personal favorite go-to is found at NEOM, with their relaxing blend of scents that set the perfect warming vibe at home. For throws, this Bronte by Moon Herringbone Throw at John Lewis is a classic.
And of course, with Christmas festivities around the corner, it’s a good time to stock up the wine rack. Why not have a luxurious collection of wines delivered to your doorstep? I always look forward to a home delivery of Virgin Wines’ 12-bottle collection of best-rated vintages. Luckily they’re currently offering a festive discount of 50% of this offering. And if you’re looking for a perfect pairing, Neal’s Yard Dairy bundle of three flavoursome cheeses, which is sure to be a crowd pleaser (also a steal at 20% off).

For moody lighting at the entrance, these hurricane lamps are not only perennial but look lovely as a pair especially at the entrance.
While I won’t be travelling to Denmark anytime soon, there’s no doubt that I’ve brought back a little piece of their culture to my home and I hope you’ll incorporate some hygge into your home this season too.
